Olympic Triathlon

The Olympic distance triathlon features $8000 in prize money and attracts some of the fastest triathletes in the West. Age groupers and elites compete together on a scenic and fast course.  Relay Team categories continue to be very popular with athletes of all ages and abilities.
     Distances: Swim 1.5km, Bike 40km, Run 10km
     Date: Sunday June 15, 2008

     Start time: 8:30am
     Age Requirements: 18 year old on Dec 31, 2008

The Course:
 The swim is a two loop clockwise course, with a short beach run in between laps. Wetsuits are allowed, long sleeves recommended. The cycling leg is a flat and scenic course which starts with a clockwise loop around Wasa Lake and then follows the Rocky Mountain Trench north toward Skookumchuck. The return portion of the bike takes racers back along the Kootenay River to the north Park entry on Wasa Lake Drive. The event will wrap-up with a NEW and very entertaining, flat out and back run on a paved trail along the lake. Runners will be cheered to the finish line by sports broadcaster Bob McWhinnie. Get your tri Club in the Triathlon CLUB Challenge! Clubs from all over USA and Canada will compete against each other for top spot and cool prizes. Results will be based on lowest total time for the top 5 individual olympic triathletes with at least 2 females will be included. A Tri Club may have any number of triathletes participating in the triathlon, but only five will be counting for the total time. To qualify, all members must be part of the same club that is affiliated with a triathlon governing body, such as Tri BC, ATA, and USAT.   So round up your Tri Club teammates, challenge other clubs, indicate your training club name in the on-line form, and come to the Wasa Triathlon with team spirit and enthusiasm!

Prize Money
$8000 in prize money for the elite triathletes will be divided equally between female and male categories. Triathletes must complete the Olympic Triathlon to qualify! Prize money winners will be removed from the age-group awards.

Age-Group categories and awards
Solo:
 
For male and female competitors, the age group categories are as follows (age as of December 31st, 2008): 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, etc and AWAD category (athletes with a disability - please visit tribc.org for more details)

Teams:
Top teams in each category will be recognized with awards. The total combined AGE (as of Dec. 31, 2008) of the participant of each leg determines the male, female and mixed team category: less than 72, 72-119, 120-155, over 155.

Note:
As a special feature of the Wasa Triathlon, teams of 2 athletes can compete in the relay team category as follows: Two athletes share the three legs of the triathlon, or the two can use an individual triathlete as their swimmer.

Short Course Triathlon
The Short Course Triathlon is for all athletes ages 16 and up, suited for the first timer and recreational all the way up to the more serious triathlete seeking a speedy effort. The Short Course Triathlon is ran on an overlapping course with the Olympic Triathlon,   making for a thrilling race stage.
    Distances: Swim 750m, Bike 20km, Run 5km
   Date: Sunday June 15, 2008
   Start time: 9:00am
  Age Requirement: 16 year old on Dec 31, 2008

The Course
: The race will start at Main Beach, on the North end of Wasa Lake. Overall the course is not different than in 2007, except that the run course will take athletes through the campground nature trail offering more variety. The 750m swim course is a one clock-wise triangular lap. Wetsuits are allowed, long sleeve is recommended. Athletes will cycle on 3 identical clockwise loops around the scenic Wasa Lake Park with very little change in altitude. The event will wrap-up with a very entertaining, flat out and back run on a paved trail along the lake, with a campground nature trail section. TriKids Triathlon
The Trikids triathlon event is the highlight of the weekend!  Check this out: full course set-up as for the Sunday events, 3 separate events for various age categories, a TriKids’ clinic prior to the main events, the encouraging voice Sport Broadcaster Bob McWhinnie, shirt, medal and food for all !!! So kids, sign up, bring your smile to the start line and swim, bike and run to the Wasa Triathlon finish line. You are a triathlete!

The course: For all the details on all the courses of the TriKids races, please see the course map. The swim  will follow the shallow waters along the beach and will be safe for all swimmers. All participants must swim the first leg by making all efforts to not stand and water run. The bike is an out and back route on the quiet park roads. Safety: Each child must have an adult supervisor present during the event, to assist in the transition area or be a course marshall, and to ensure a fun and safe time for all.

Race Bag pick-up: Race bag pick-up will take place at the Prestige Hotel and Resort, Cranbrook (209 Van Horne St. South), June 14th from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. Pre-Race meeting and Carbo Banquet will follow, highly recommend that you attend.

Carbo Banquet Dinner: Athletes, family and friends of the Wasa Triathlon have the opportunity to get together, socialize with old friends and relax over a delicious pasta and chicken dinner. It will be served at the Prestige Inn and Resort immediately following the race meeting. The dinner will consist of pasta with several choices of sauce, roasted chicken, a variety of salads, bread, desert, juice or sport drink and tea or coffee. Tickets may be purchased on the registration form at the following costs: $8 for Kids under 12, $12 for Youth 12-17 and under and $16 for adults age 18 and over

Post race Festivities: will include Food, Music, Awards and Prizes. Family and friends are welcome to join the celebration! Extra Lunches may be purchased in the on-line registration.

TriKids can register on-line for the same fee until June 12. Registration is available on race morning, but shirts cannot be guaranteed.

Triathlon BC and mandatory race-day insurance
For information on the benefits and how to become an annual Triathlon BC (TriBC) member, go to www.tribc.org . 2008 TriBC members and Alberta Tri members have their insurance covered for this event. All other athletes MUST purchase, in the registration process, a one-day insurance in order to participate. The race-day insurance fees are as follows:
For solo, add $10, For a team, add $5 /person, For a TriKid, add $1
